Cole is battling himself. When he sees the sparrows, he just wants to knock them out of the tree. But after the storm, he wants to make sure that they are all right. When he finds the four baby sparrows knocked out of the tree, Cole wonders if their death was quick and painless, or slow and excruciating. He then realizes that life is sweet and short. After all... "We are not here for a long time, but we are here for a GOOD time."
Character V.S. Nature
Cole is battling the bugs. He can't move, so the bugs have an all you can eat feast on him. Cole is also battling the storm.
I totally agree with you Annie! I found those two conflicts in chapters 9-10 myself. I think that with character vs. nature, it's not just Cole vs. the bugs and the storm. I think it's Cole vs. the whole island, because of all that he has gone through. I really liked your analysis of character vs. self (I really liked that quote at the end). :)
